Stained Glass Window Cookies

Butter cookie frames filled with crushed hard candy that melts into glowing 'stained glass' centers. They look like little windows!
Course: Dessert

Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • assorted hard candies crushed by color

Equipment

  • Rolling pin
  • Large and small cookie cutters
  • Baking sheets
  • Parchment paper

Method

  1. Beat the butter and sugar; beat in the egg and vanilla.
  2. Stir in the flour, baking powder, and salt; chill the dough 1 hour.
  3. Roll the dough 1/4-inch thick; cut large shapes, then cut a smaller shape out of the center of each. Place the frames on parchment-lined sheets.
  4. Fill each center with crushed candy of one color, level with the dough.
  5. Bake at 350°F for 8–10 minutes, until the candy has melted and the edges are light gold. Cool completely on the sheet so the centers harden.

Notes

  • Fill each center with one color of crushed candy, level with the dough.
