How to Make It

Melt most of the chocolate in short bursts in the microwave, stirring until smooth. Spoon it into silicone half-sphere molds, swirl to coat, chill, then add a second thin coat and chill again. Pop the shells out and fill half of them with hot cocoa mix and mini marshmallows. Warm a plate, press an empty shell rim-down on it for a couple of seconds to melt the edge, and seal it onto a filled half. Drizzle the bombs with the rest of the melted chocolate, add sprinkles, and chill to set. To serve, drop one in a mug, pour hot milk over it, and watch it melt open.

Tips for the Best Hot Cocoa Bombs

  • Melt slowly. Use 30-second bursts and stir in between.
  • Two coats. A second thin coat keeps the shells from cracking.
  • Warm plate trick. Melt the shell edge on a warm plate to seal the halves.
  • Handle gently. Chocolate shells are delicate.
  • Pour hot milk over it. That’s what makes it melt open.
